What is this calculator?

Convert your fuel economy between US MPG, Imperial MPG, L/100km, and km/L. Be aware that the US and UK use different gallon measurements.

What is the difference?

A US gallon is 3.785 liters, while an Imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 liters. Therefore, 30 Imperial MPG is not the same efficiency as 30 US MPG.

How to use this calculator

Select your MPG system (US or Imperial) and enter your fuel economy to view the conversions.

Formula / Calculation Method

For US MPG:

  • L/100km = 235.214583 / US MPG
  • km/L = US MPG × 0.425144

For Imperial (UK) MPG:

  • L/100km = 282.480936 / Imperial MPG
  • km/L = Imperial MPG × 0.354006

Worked Example

Calculation scenario for standard conversions:

Inputs:

  • Fuel Economy Unit: US MPG
  • MPG (US): 100

Calculated Result:

  • Main Result: 100 US MPG
  • L/100km: 2.35
  • km/L: 42.51

Frequently asked questions

Are real-world efficiency losses factored in?
Basic mathematical models assume ideal conditions unless an efficiency/loss variable is specifically requested in the form.
Can I use this for commercial sizing?
This provides a strong initial estimate, but commercial implementations require professional on-site engineering assessments.
